Making hidden careers visible to the workforce of tomorrow.
When people hear “waste”, they picture bins. But behind the scenes is a huge industry powering sustainability, clean energy, logistics, technology and the circular economy, yet most people have no idea the careers even exist.
Whether you’re into engineering, sustainability, operations, science, data, communications or leadership, the sector offers real progression, real purpose and environmental impact.
The waste and resources sector is changing fast. It needs skilled people at every level, from drivers, collection crews and factory teams to engineers, innovators, problem-solvers and future leaders.
This is a chance to build a career that matters.
68,000 New roles
The career path nobody told you about.
About the project
Think Again is here to make people aware of the hidden career opportunities that exist.
Led by CIWM President Vicki Hughes, the campaign is challenging employers, educators and industry leaders to rethink how the sector talks about careers, attracts talent and opens doors for the next generation.
Think Again aims to create a movement of progressive companies willing to:
Review the language used to describe the waste sector, the roles it offers and the opportunities it provides.
Actively showcase the breadth of careers, people and opportunities available.
Support clear pathways into the sector for new entrants and career returners.
Champion inclusive, flexible and welcoming workplaces by sharing best practices.
Share real stories that demonstrate the impact and opportunities the sector creates.
“I never thought I’d work in this sector.”
Unexpected careers. Real opportunity.
"I didn't plan a career in this sector, I fell into it by accident as a lot of us do, but it has opened doors I never imagined and I know I'm not alone. This isn't a sector people are rejecting, it's one they're not seeing. 'Think Again' will change that. It's about how we talk about ourselves to others, how we show up and how we demonstrate the incredible opportunities this dynamic sector can offer."
Vicki Hughes, CIWM President
